The P.C. Rossin College of Engineering & Applied Science at Lehigh University invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics (MEM). We seek a high-profile, accomplished scholar and educator who will build upon the continued growth and success of the Department to expand its research and educational efforts.
The Department currently has five tenure-track assistant professors, seven tenured associate professors, and ten tenured full professors. In addition, we have eight Professors of Practice, three of whom are affiliated with the Technical Entrepreneurship Program. Our undergraduate, Masters, and Ph.D. programs are vibrant and growing, with a current enrollment of over 275 undergraduate and 165 graduate students. Our B.S. program is ABET accredited and the largest in our college. The Department offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics.
MEM faculty members maintain outstanding international reputations in a variety of areas, including controls and robotics, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, thermo-heat transfer, biomechanics, and mathematical methods. Annual research funding for MEM faculty currently exceeds $5.6 million. In the last five years, our early-career faculty have won nine young investigator awards from NSF, ARO, AFOSR, and ONR. In addition, our faculty have received numerous awards in recognition of their accomplishments from professional societies (ASME, AIAA, APS) and several federal agencies.

A candidate must possess a Ph.D., have an exemplary record of achievement in research, teaching, and service at a level sufficient for appointment as a tenured senior faculty member, and demonstrate a commitment to supporting the advancement of fellow faculty members at all levels. The applicant is expected to be a dynamic leader with a strong track record of interdisciplinary research, demonstrated creativity and contributions to engineering education pedagogy, and demonstrated commitment to enhance diversity, inclusion and equity.
Lehigh University is located in Bethlehem, PA, in the rapidly growing Lehigh Valley metropolitan area. The Lehigh Valley, with a population over 800,000, is located approximately 1 hour north of Philadelphia and 1.5 hours west of New York City. The University has a current enrollment of approximately 5,000 undergraduate students and 2,000 graduate students and is planning to increase these enrollments in the next few years.
